What is Tofranil?

Tofranil is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is available in doses of 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg. The main active ingredient, imipramine, has central and peripheral M-choline blocking, antispasmodic and mild antihistamine activity.

Indications for use of Tofranil

Therapy with the drug is indicated in cases of depression, urinary incontinence, in preparation for cystoscopy and cystourethrogram.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage and duration of treatment are determined by the physician, depending on the nature and severity of the symptoms. To achieve a therapeutic effect, the drug is taken for at least 2-4 weeks.

In depression: 25 mg, 1-3 times daily; the dose can be gradually increased to a daily dose of 150-200 mg. The standard maintenance dose is 50-100 mg daily.

In panic disorder: treatment should be started at the lowest dose and gradually increased to 75-100 mg daily. The minimum duration of treatment is 6 months.

Urinary incontinence in children: children over 6 years of age are prescribed a daily dose of 25 mg for a body weight of 20-25 kg, for 25-35 kg a daily dose of 25-50 mg, for over 35 kg a daily dose of 50-75 mg.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity, hepatic or renal insufficiency, ischaemia, tachycardia, congestive heart failure, predisposition to convulsions, schizophrenia, epilepsy, pregnancy and lactation, glaucoma, children under six years of age.

Side effects

Possible side effects: headache, nausea, dizziness, tremor, convulsions, hallucinations, sleep disturbances, tachycardia, arrhythmia, leukocytosis or leukopenia, constipation, hepatitis, gynecomastia, impotence, fever, hair loss.
