What is Calan

Calan tablets are calcium antagonists that reduce myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing myocardial contractility and heart rate. The main active ingredient, verapamil, causes dilation of the coronary vessels of the heart and increases coronary blood flow, helping to reduce the strain on the heart. Available in strengths: 80 mg, 120 mg, 240 mg.

Indications For Use

Calan may be used for the following conditions:

• chronic stable angina pectoris

Dosage and method of administration of Calan

The tablets are taken orally with water, with or without meals. In hypertension, the initial daily dose is 120 mg, which may be increased to 240 mg. For angina pectoris: 360-480 mg daily; maximum daily dose is 480 mg. In patients with impaired liver function, the daily dose should not exceed 120 mg.

Contraindications

Complicated acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, bradycardic syndrome, tachycardia, sinoatrial block, arterial hypotension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation/triple atrial fibrillation with WPW syndrome, age less than 18 years.

Side effects

Calan is occasionally accompanied by the following side effects: arrhythmia with bradycardia, arterial hypotension, constipation, headache, dizziness, increased fatigue, tremor, oedema, allergic reactions (urticaria, rash, angioedema), gynaecomastia, galactorrhoea, impotence, gingival hyperplasia.
