What is Paroxetine

Paroxetine is a potent selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is available in 10 mg and 20 mg doses. Indications

Dosage and method of administration of Paroxetine

The tablets should be taken orally, once daily with a meal. The tablet should not be crushed or chewed. The dose should not be stopped abruptly, but reduced gradually.

Major depressive disorder: the daily dose is 20 mg, improvement occurs 1-2 weeks after starting treatment. If treatment with the 20 mg dose proves ineffective, it can be gradually increased (10 mg at a time) up to a maximum daily dose of 50 mg. The duration of treatment should be at least six months.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: the recommended initial dose is 20 mg, subsequently increasing by 10 mg daily up to 40 mg. The maximum daily dose is 60 mg. Treatment lasts 2 months or more.

Panic and post-traumatic stress disorder: start therapy with 10 mg daily, gradually increasing up to 40 mg daily. Some patients may need a maximum daily dose of 50 mg.

Social phobias, generalised and social anxiety disorders: the effective daily dose is 20 mg, in severe cases the maximum daily dose is up to 50 mg.

Treatment in the elderly starts with a dose of 20 mg and can be gradually increased up to 40 mg daily. In cases of renal and hepatic insufficiency, the dose is reduced to a minimum and adjusted by the doctor. Paroxetine treatment is not indicated in children.

Contraindications

Treatment with Paroxetine is contraindicated in the following cases:

• Hypersensitivity to the components of the medicinal product;
• concomitant use with MAO inhibitors, including linezolid, and within two weeks of discontinuation;
• treatment with thioridazine and liver enzyme inhibitors;
• in combination with pimozide.
