What is Amitriptyline
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant available in 25 mg and 50 mg tablets. The main active ingredient, Amitriptyline, has thymoleptic, antidepressant, anxiolytic, sedative and antidyssuric effects. Amitriptyline is used to treat depression in children and adults.
Indications
Amitriptyline is prescribed for:
- the depressive phase of manic-depressive psychosis;

- depression after prolonged treatment with neuroleptics, reserpine;
- reactive depression;
- neurotic depression;

Directions for use and posology
The tablets should be taken whole with water. The initial daily dose is 25-50 mg before bedtime. Thereafter, the dose is gradually increased over a week to 150-200 mg daily, divided into several doses, but most are still taken in the evening. If there is no improvement during the second week, the daily dose is increased to 300 mg, and then gradually reduced to 50-100 mg daily.
Therapy should be continued until the symptoms of depression disappear completely, usually for at least three months.
In the elderly or those with mild forms of depression: 50-100 mg daily, taken once before bedtime.
The therapeutic effect of the medicinal product becomes apparent 7-10 days after starting treatment. It is not recommended to take the preparation for more than 6-8 months.
Contraindications
Do not prescribe treatment with Amitriptyline in the following cases:

Side effects
