What is Ampicillin?

Ampicillin is a tablet available in 250 mg and 500 mg doses, belonging to the aminopenicillin group. It is indicated for infections of the stomach and intestines, middle ear, sinuses, urogenital tract and kidneys.

Indications for Ampicillin

Ampicillin is indicated for infections of:

  • biliary system (cholecystitis, cholangitis);
  • infections of the respiratory and otorhinolaryngological system (pharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, lung abscess);

Dosage and use of Ampicillin

Tablets should be taken half an hour before a meal or two hours after a meal; treatment lasts from 5 days to 3 weeks, depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the disease.

Dosage for adults and children over 14 years of age: 250 to 1,000 mg with an interval of 6 hours.

In infections of the urogenital tract: 500 mg every 8 hours.

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever: 1000-2000 mg every 6 hours.

Pneumonia: 500 mg every 6 hours.

Gonorrhoea: 2000 mg ampicillin combined with 1000 mg probenecid.

Contraindications

Ampicillin should not be taken in case of hypersensitivity to ampicillin or amoxicillin, penicillins, cephalosporins; severe hepatic or renal insufficiency; infectious mononucleosis; leukaemia.
