What is Celexa

Celexa is an antidepressant, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that normalises serotonin levels in the brain and is used to treat depression and increased anxiety. It is available in 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg tablets.

Directions For Use And Dosage

Treatment with Celexa® citalopram should be started with 20 mg, once daily, without chewing the tablet and taken whole with water. The drug can be taken independently of meals. Depending on the symptoms and the efficacy of the dose taken, it may be increased to 60 mg daily.

In elderly patients, 20 mg is prescribed immediately, which can then be increased to 40 mg. In patients with renal insufficiency, a minimum daily dose of 20 mg is prescribed.

Contraindications

Do not prescribe in case of hypersensitivity to citalopram, treatment with MAO inhibitors (citalopram should be taken at least two weeks after taking inhibitors).

Side effects

Side effects are generally mild and may appear during the first few weeks of treatment. They include dry mouth, drowsiness, nausea, tremor, increased sweating, bradycardia. Symptoms disappear without interruption, but if a manic episode occurs, therapy should be discontinued.
