What is Doxazosin

Doxazosin is an antihypertensive medicine, an α-adrenoreceptor blocker. It is available in 1 mg, 2 mg and 4 mg tablets. The main active ingredient, doxazosin, blocks the receptors, which causes a reduction in blood pressure. Doxazosin does not cause adverse metabolic reactions, so it can be prescribed to people with diabetes mellitus, gout, insulin resistance, bronchial asthma, left ventricular hypertrophy and in the elderly.

Indications for use of Doxazosin

Doxazosin is indicated in patients with hypertension and is indicated for the control of blood pressure as monotherapy and combination therapy. If monotherapy is not effective, it is used concomitantly with thiazide diuretics, β-adrenoreceptors and calcium channel blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

The drug is also prescribed for benign prostatic hyperplasia and treatment of urinary obstruction. In the treatment of BPH, it is used in conditions of normal blood pressure and in the presence of hypertension.

Dosage and administration

Doxazosin is taken orally once daily with water. It can be taken in the morning and evening, preferably on an empty stomach. In hypertension: initial daily dose of 1 mg, which may be increased after 1-2 weeks of treatment to 2 mg and then, if necessary, to 4 mg. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 16 mg.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia: the initial dose is 1 mg daily, which may be increased to 2 mg and then, after a period of time, to 4 mg. The maximum recommended dose is 8 mg, increasing the dose gradually over 1-2 weeks.

In the elderly, the usual adult doses are used; in children, the safety of use of the drug has not been studied.
