What is Effexor ER?

Effexor ER is an antidepressant used to treat depression, panic attacks and generalised or social anxiety disorder. Its main active ingredient, venlafaxine, promotes the transmission of nerve impulses to the central nervous system. It is available in 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg tablets.

Indications for use of Effexor ER

Dosage and Application Characteristics

The tablets are taken orally with meals. Each capsule should be taken whole with plenty of water. The daily dose is taken in the morning or evening at the same time.

The recommended starting dose for depression is 75 mg. In more severe cases, the doctor may prescribe 150 mg all at once. Every fortnight or more, the dose may be increased by 75 mg until the desired effect is achieved. The maximum daily dose is 350 mg.

Treatment of depression lasts at least six months, with dose adjustment by the doctor. The drug should not be stopped abruptly and the dose should be reduced gradually over at least two weeks.

Contraindications

Do not use Effexor ER in case of: hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, concomitant use of MAO inhibitors, hepatic and renal disorders, pregnancy or lactation, age below 18 years. Caution is advised in patients who have suffered myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, heart failure, hypertension, tachycardia, predisposition to seizures, haemorrhage, angle-closure glaucoma.

Side effects

Adverse effects may include: increased fatigue, headache, weakness, stomach pain, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting, constipation, bruxism, increased body temperature, anxiety, paraesthesia, tremor, visual and auditory disturbances, taste disturbance, apathy.
