What is Elavil

Elavil is a tablet prescribed for depression of various aetiologies, psychosis, chronic pain syndrome and migraine prophylaxis. It is available in doses of 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg. The main active ingredient is amitriptyline; the therapeutic effect after taking occurs after 2-3 weeks of treatment.

Indications

Indications for use and dosage

The initial dose is 25-50 mg once daily at bedtime. Subsequently the dose is increased to 150-200 mg daily, divided into several doses, but most are taken in the evening. The dose should be increased gradually over 5-6 days. If the patient’s condition does not improve in the second week, the daily dose is increased to 300 mg. Once the depressive symptoms disappear, the dose is reduced to 50-100 mg daily.

Treatment is continued for at least three months.

In the elderly: 30-100 mg daily, then the dose is reduced to 25-50 mg daily.
In children with enuresis: for children aged 6-10 years, 10-20 mg daily, for children aged 11-16 years, 25-50 mg daily.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the medicinal product, myocardial infarction, heart failure, use of MAO inhibitors, arterial hypertension, benign prostatic hyperplasia, bladder atony, acute renal and hepatic diseases, blood diseases, intestinal obstruction, age below 6 years.
