What is Fluoxetine

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is prescribed for the treatment of depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder in adult patients. It is available in 10 mg and 20 mg capsules. Fluoxetine improves mood and general well-being and helps to reduce anxiety and fear. The capsules have an analgesic and stimulant effect, without cardiotoxic or sedative effects at medium doses. The therapeutic effect appears after 1-2 weeks of treatment and lasts at least one week after withdrawal.

Indications for use

Fluoxetine is prescribed for: depressive episodes/disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder. In bulimia nervosa, it is prescribed as part of a complex treatment to reduce uncontrolled food intake and reduce the risk of obesity.

Directions For Use And Dosage

The tablets are taken orally, independent of meals. Major depressive disorder: The initial dose is 20 mg in the morning and can be increased to 20 mg twice daily after 3-4 weeks. In some patients, the daily dose may be increased to 60 mg if the therapeutic effect is insufficient. If no therapeutic effect is observed after 10 weeks, the use of the drug in the patient should be reconsidered.

Bulimia nervosa: Patients are prescribed a minimum dose of 20 mg per day.

For elderly patients or patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency, the daily dose should be a minimum of 20 mg.
Abrupt withdrawal should be avoided, as with other antidepressants, the dose of Fluoxetine should be reduced gradually over 1-2 weeks. If the patient’s condition worsens after withdrawal, return to the therapeutic dose and continue treatment.
