What Is Hydrochlorothiazide?

Hydrochlorothiazide is a medicine for the treatment of increased swelling, heart failure and hypertension. It is available in 12.5 mg and 25 mg tablets.

Indications

Hydrochlorothiazide is indicated for the treatment of circulatory stagnation in cardiovascular insufficiency, nephritis, cirrhosis with hypertension, toxaemia in pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, glaucoma and decreased intraocular pressure.

Dosage and administration

The tablets are taken orally with or after meals. The daily dose is individually adjusted and can be 0.025-0.2 grams. It may be taken once in the morning or divided into 2 doses in the morning.

The daily dose of 0.2 g should not be exceeded; for the elderly with hypertension, the dose should be reduced to 0.0125 g per day. The drug can be taken for 3-7 days; if necessary, therapy should be continued after a 3-4 day break. In hypertension take 0.025-0.05 g per day, in glaucoma 0.025 g.
