What Isoniazid Is

Isoniazid is an antituberculosis medicine that is administered in monotherapy and in combination therapy. The main active ingredient is Isoniazid and each tablet contains 300 mg.

Indications

It is indicated for the treatment of tuberculosis in all its forms and locations, latent tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis prophylaxis in persons in contact with tuberculosis patients.

Dosage and administration

The daily dose and duration of treatment are determined on an individual basis. The tablets should be taken before a meal or after 30-40 minutes. The daily dose for adults and children from 4 years of age is calculated as 5 mg per 1 kg body weight per day or 10 mg/kg three times a week. The maximum daily dose for children is 500 mg and for adults 600 mg. Duration of therapy: active tuberculosis 6-8 months, prophylactic therapy 2-3 months.

Contraindications

Isoniazid therapy should not be prescribed in case of:

  • allergy to any of the components of the drug
  • epilepsy;
  • predisposition to epileptic seizures;
  • severe psychosis
  • poliomyelitis;
  • toxic hepatitis;
  • acute and chronic hepatic and renal failure
  • severe atherosclerosis
