What Is Lamisil And What Does It Do?

Lamisil is a broad spectrum antifungal. It has a long-term therapeutic effect even with short-term use. The active ingredient, terbinafine, inhibits the reproduction of fungal cells and causes their death. The product is effective against dermatophytes, i.e. moulds that need keratin for nourishment and must live in the stratum corneum of skin, hair or nails to survive.

Lamisil Indications

The main indication for the use of Lamisil is the occurrence and development of fungal infections. Infections may include:

  • dermatophytosis of the trunk (ringworm – infection of the skin by filamentous fungi of the genus Trichophyton (Trichophytosis) or Microsporium (Microsporium))
  • dermatophytosis of the foot (fungal infection of the skin of the feet). Symptoms of dermatophytosis of the foot include scaling of the feet and sometimes redness and itching);
  • inguinal dermatophytosis (dermatophyte infection of the skin of the groin, more common in men). It presents as itchy, scaly lesions or plaques affecting the folds between the scrotum and thighs);
  • cutaneous candidiasis, caused by the fungus Candida (the fungus presents as well-defined, swollen, pinkish areas of skin with blisters, papules and ulcers);
  • Lichen mosaicus (skin infection caused by a yeast-like fungus of the genus Malassezia, with formation of multiple asymptomatic patches varying from white to yellow-brown, brown or pink).

Lamisil Usage and Dosage

Lamisil is usually available as a cream, spray and gel for external use only. Tablets are also available for oral use when other forms of the product cannot be used.

The affected areas of the skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before applying the product. Lamisil is applied or sprayed in a thin layer on the affected areas and rubbed in thoroughly. In case of infections accompanied by nappy rash (under the breast, between the toes, in the groin area, between the buttocks), the areas to be treated can be covered with gauze, especially at night.

The duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of the infection.
Do not indulge yourself. Ask your doctor for a personalised treatment. Different doses of medication than those listed below may be necessary. Inadequate treatment may lead to reinfection.
