What is Lexapro
Lexapro (escitalopram) is an antidepressant used to treat depression and generalised anxiety disorder. It comes in tablets with convenient dosage strengths: 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg.
Indications for Use
Lexapro is used to treat the following diseases and conditions:

Lexapro Dosage and Administration
Tablets should be taken orally, independent of meals, once daily. In depression: 10 mg once daily, in severe cases 20 mg. The effect of taking the drug develops 2-4 weeks after the start of treatment. To consolidate the effect of the therapy, the drug is used for a further six months after the disappearance of symptoms.
Panic disorder: the daily dose during the first week of treatment is 5 mg and thereafter 10 mg per day. The dose can be increased to 20 mg per day if the disorder is severe. The effect is apparent after 3 months of treatment.
Social phobia: 10 mg daily, therapeutic effect occurs after 2-4 weeks of treatment.
Generalised anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder: 10 mg daily, treatment duration is 6 months. To prevent relapses, treatment can be extended for up to one year.
Contraindications
Do not use Lexapro in case of: hypersensitivity to escitalopram and other components of the preparation; concomitant use of irreversible MAO inhibitors, non-selective reversible MAO inhibitors, pimozide; lactose intolerance; lactase deficiency; glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome; in childhood and adolescence.
Side effects
Occasionally, therapy is accompanied by side effects affecting various organ systems. Possible side effects: thrombocytopenia, weight loss, anorexia, anxiety, restlessness, decreased libido, hallucinations, headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, tremor, convulsions, tachycardia, insomnia, visual and auditory disturbances, allergic reactions (oedema, urticaria, rash).
