What is Micardis

Micardis is a specific angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It is available in 20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg tablets. Micardis is used to lower blood pressure and prevent the risk of myocardial infarction. The main active substance is telmisartan, which reduces plasma aldosterone levels.

Indications for Micardis

Dosage and Administration

Tablets are taken orally with water, independent of meals. Treatment of hypertension: usually a daily dose of 40 mg. In some patients a daily dose of 20 mg is effective. If no therapeutic effect occurs, telmisartan is increased to 80 mg daily. The maximum antihypertensive effect develops 4-8 weeks after starting treatment with the drug.

For the prevention of cardiovascular disease, Micardis is taken as a single dose of 80 mg daily.

The drug can be taken in combination with thiazide diuretics to lower blood pressure.

Special indications

In renal insufficiency, treatment with Micardis should be started with a minimum dose of 20 mg per day. In mild to moderate renal insufficiency no dose adjustment is necessary.

Pregnancy: The medicinal product should not be prescribed during pregnancy and lactation and is not recommended if the patient is planning to become pregnant.

Hepatic impairment: Mycardis is not prescribed in patients with cholestasis, biliary tract obstruction or severe hepatic impairment.

In patients with impaired renal function: serum potassium and creatinine levels should be monitored.

Contraindications

Micardis is contraindicated in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy, during lactation, bile duct obstruction and severe liver disease.
