Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is a chronic condition that occurs because the muscular valve in the oesophagus malfunctions, causing stomach contents to back up into the oesophagus. It can lead to reflux oesophagitis, i.e. inflammation of the oesophageal lining and other disturbances. If left untreated, it can lead to destruction of the oesophageal mucosa, which in turn causes inflammation and surface erosion and, in severe cases, ulcerative defects of the oesophagus, sometimes even narrowing. Proton pump inhibitors are used to reduce the acidity of gastric juices.

One such drug is Nexium, which is effective in reducing acid secretion from the stomach by a specific mechanism of action. It is a specific inhibitor of the proton pump in the parietal cells. You will find more information about the properties and action of this drug in our material.
