Oedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain tissues of the body. Fluid accumulation occurs when fluid leaks out of small blood vessels into neighbouring tissues. It is good if the cause is a large amount of salty food eaten at night. Unfortunately, however, the cause of the swelling is often very dangerous, such as cardiovascular disease.

A potassium-sparing diuretic called Triamterene can help to combat bloating. It is very often used in combination with other thiazide diuretics. Below you can read about its properties, indications and contraindications. Then you won’t have to wonder why this drug has acquired such a good reputation in United Kingdom.

What is Triamterene

As mentioned above, Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic that helps the body get rid of excess water and salts and prevents potassium levels from falling too low. The diuretic effect is noticeable about 20 minutes after taking and the maximum effect is obtained after 2-3 hours.

Indications

Triamterene is indicated for the treatment of oedema in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver or kidney disease called nephrotic syndrome. The product is also used to treat oedema caused by taking steroid drugs or by an excess of aldosterone (a hormone needed to regulate sodium retention in the kidneys and the release of potassium) in the body.

Contraindications for use

Contraindications include hypersensitivity to Triamterene or any other component of the medicinal product, hepatic and/or renal insufficiency, increased potassium levels, pregnancy and lactation.
