What is Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin is used to treat and prevent relapses of depression. It is available as an extended-release tablet, with a dosage of 300 mg. The main active ingredient is bupropion hydrochloride, which is an inhibitor of neuronal effects on noradrenaline and dopamine, with minimal effects on serotonin.

Indications for use of Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin tablets are prescribed for the treatment of depression. If the body responds positively to the drug, treatment with Wellbutrin may be continued to prevent relapse.

Dosage and administration of Wellbutrin

The action of the drug begins two weeks after the start of treatment. The tablets should be taken whole with water according to the prescribed dosage.

In adults: Wellbutrin tablets should be taken twice daily, 8 hours apart. The maximum single dose should not exceed 200 mg. If insomnia occurs during treatment, the dose should be reduced or the tablets should not be taken before bedtime.

Initial treatment: 150 mg of the medicinal product as a single dose. The full effect of treatment does not occur until two weeks after the start of therapy. If the 150 mg dose is ineffective for a patient, improvement may occur after increasing the dose to 300 mg daily, divided into two doses. If there is no therapeutic effect after a few weeks, the dose can be increased to 400 mg daily, divided into two doses at 8-hour intervals.

Maintenance therapy: acute manifestations of depression may require treatment for at least 6 months; a daily dose of Wellbutrin 300 mg is effective for up to one year of treatment.

Treatment with Wellbutrin in the elderly: due to the risk of renal failure, elderly and very elderly people may need to reduce the dose.

In cases of impaired renal function: treatment should be started at the lowest dose.
In patients with hepatic impairment: Wellbutrin should be taken with caution and the intervals between tablets should be increased. In severe cirrhosis, the daily dose should not exceed 150 mg.

Bupropion cannot be administered in case of hypersensitivity to bupropion or to other components of the medicinal product or in case of epileptic seizures, abrupt withdrawal from sedatives or alcohol, concomitant use of other medicines containing bupropion or MAO inhibitors and in case of anorexia or bulimia.
